Global Mapper is more than just a viewer capable of displaying the most popular raster, elevation and vector datasets. It converts, edits, prints, tracks GPS and allows you to utilize GIS functionality on your datasets in one low-cost and easy-to-use software package.

Global Mapper also includes the ability to directly access multiple online sources of imagery, topographic maps, and gridded terrain data. Global Mapper Version Release Notes

  • v.11.02 - Added support to the Map Layout tool for automatically generating a map legend, either from the collection of loaded map features display styles or from a user-specified color palette. Added 'Area Styles' tab to Options dialog for vector layers with area features allowing users to setup the styling of areas in a layer. Now users can use the default type-based styling, apply a single style to all area features in a layer, setup an attribute-based styling system that styles the areas based on the value of an attribute value or the display label, or randomly assign colors to the areas in a layer. Added 'Line Styles' tab to Options dialog for vector layers with line features allowing users to setup the styling of lines in a layer. Now users can use the default type-based styling, apply a single style to all line features in a layer, setup an attribute-based styling system that styles the lines based on the value of an attribute value or the display label, or randomly assign colors to the lines in a layer. Added support for resampling raster and elevation layers using bicubic interpolation or a box average of size 3x3, 4x4, or 5x5, in addition to the previously available options of nearest neighbor and bilinear interpolation. The "anti-alias" option on the Raster Options dialog has been replaced with one for selecting the sampling method to use.
  • v.11.00 - Created native 64-bit version of Global Mapper, allowing users of 64-bit versions Windows to work with much larger data sets. Added map layout support for easily adding margins and north arrows to your map and setting up the display and location of the distance scale and elevation legend. Added support for scaling point symbols, adding custom point symbols from PNG, GIF, JPG, and (new vector) .gmsym files, and easily creating symbols of custom sizes and colors for common shapes, like dots, squares, etc. Added toolbar for Digitizer/Edit Tool to make it easier to perform many commonly used operations.   • v.10.02 - Added ability to easily create strike-and-dip (geology) points by right-clicking in the Digitizer Tool. You can now place your strike-and-dip points and specify the dip value, azimuth angle, and symbol to use and get the appropriate symbology displayed on the map. Added support for adding custom area fill styles from image files. Added support for rotating point symbols by a user-specified angle. Added option to the Digitizer Tool to calculate the minimum, maximum, and average elevation values within selected area features. Added new ASSIGN_TYPE command to the scripting language to allow classifying loaded vector features based on one or more attribute/display label value queries. Added support for importing SOSI (a format commonly used for Norwegian data) format files.
  • v.10.01 - Added support for loading JPG files with embedded EXIF GPS position data. These files will be loaded as point features with picture icons. When you select one of these with the Feature Info Tool, the JPG image will be displayed. Added support for tracking and managing multiple GPS devices via an input GPS data stream including $PRAVE sentences. With a compatible receiver, you can now use Global Mapper for fleet management. There is a new Manage GPS Devices option under the GPS menu that provides extensive functionality for managing the collection of GPS devices being tracked. Added new Color Grade tab to raster options dialog to allow complex manipulation of color channel values and saturation for loaded raster files. This allows 'grading' each color channel from a specified input range for a color channel to a specified output range. Added support for exporting loaded data to NITF format files. Added support for exporting an alpha channel to ECW and JPG2000 format files.
  • v.10 - Added support for importing ESRI personal geodatabase (MDB) files. Added support for importing and exporting BigTIFF files. Added more control over placement of labels for point features. Now when choosing the font to use for point features, you can also choose where to place the label for the point relative to the point location. An automatic setting will try different locations to try and make the label fit. Added support for selecting/changing the layer that features are in when editing existing features and creating new ones with the Digitizer Tool. Added KML/KMZ Super Overlay Support! This allows working with huge data sets in Google Earth. The option to automatically grid the data on the KML/KMZ export dialog enables this behavior. Added support for creating new feature coordinates based on distance/bearing and/or COGO values from a start location using the Digitizer Tool. Added option on the Gridding tab for exports to grid to the currently selected area features. This will create a separate export file for each selected area feature. Naming can be done using the display labels or an attribute of the selected area feature(s). Added options when editing multiple features to rename attributes and also to copy the values of one attribute to a different attribute. Added new Coordinate Convertor option under the Tools menu to allow easily converting a coordinate between any two supported projections/datums/units. Added ability to Search Vector Data dialog to limit your search to the existing search results. This effectively allows you to query on multiple attributes/values. Added a large collection of new available line styles to use when rendering line features or area feature borders. Added option to crop a loaded raster layer to the currently selected area feature to the Cropping tab of the Raster Options dialog accessible from the Overlay Control Center. Added Vertices button to the Feature Info dialog to allow displaying and editing the location and per-vertex elevations for line and area features and displaying per-vertex time stamps for line features.   • DIGITIZING SUPPORT! You can digitize new vector (area, line, and point) features by drawing them with the mouse. You can also edit existing vector features. Newly created and editing features can be saved to any of the supported export formats. In addition, shapes like rectangles, circles, ellipses, arcs, and concentric range rings. can be easily drawn as well.
  • GPS SUPPORT! You can track a compatible GPS device connected to your computer's serial port or USB port in real-time over any loaded data. In addition, you can mark waypoints at the current GPS location and record a tracklog of where your GPS device has been while connected, all seamless with your loaded map data!
  • EXPORT SUPPORT! You can export both vector, raster, and elevation data to a variety of formats (see below). You can merge any combination of data sets, regardless of source scale, type, and projection. You can also breakup your data into a regularly spaced grid on export if you'd like as well. See Table on right for a partial list of supported export types.
  • IMAGE RECTIFICATION! You can graphically rectify (georeference) any JPG, TIFF, or PNG image and save the results to a new fully georeferenced image. Vector data can also have a rectification process applied to it after loading to allow morphing vector data to fit other data sets.
  • CONTOUR GENERATION! You can create contours for any combination of elevation data. You can also specify the contour interval to use. The generated contour data can then be exported to any of the supported vector export formats (see previous item for a list).
  • Automatic triangulation and gridding of 3D point data sets, such as ASCII XYZ files. This allows you to convert a set of elevation samples into a fully gridded data set, which can then be used for contour generation, line of sight analysis, and view shed analysis, among other things. The data can also be exported to any of the supported elevation grid formats, such as USGS DEM.
  • Advanced screen capture. You can capture the contents of the screen to a BMP, JPG, PNG, or (Geo)TIFF file of user-specified resolution.
  • Batch conversion of almost any input data data files to any compatible export type.
  • Auto-clip collar for DRGs. You can now have the collar of USGS DRG files automatically clipped off. This allows you to seamlessly view a collection of adjacent DRG files.
  • Supports opening SDTS DLG, SDTS DEM, and most other file types directly from .tar.gz and .zip archives. This saves the major headache of decompressing each SDTS transfer into a separate directory.
  • Comprehensive view shed analysis using loaded elevation grid data from a user-specified location, transmitter height, and radius.
  • 3D Path Profiling and Line of Sight (LOS) capabilities, including receiver/transmitter heights, minimum clearance, and earth curvature options.
  • Advanced measurement capabilities, including multi-segment path lengths and headings, enclosed area, and cut-and-fill volume calculations either along a path or within an enclosed area.
  • Ability to link vector feature attributes to web sites or files.
  • Support the latest DEM and SDTS DEM formats, including decimeter DEMs.
  • Supports opening DLG-O and DEM files directly from gzipped archives. This means that you can save space and hassle by not having to decompress the data after you download it.
  • Slide over text. When you move your cursor around the screen you'll get a description of the nearest feature automatically displayed in the status bar.
  • Supports keyboard navigation. You can pan about with the arrow keys and zoom in/out with the page up/page down keys.
